Zbyněk Baladrán at Frieze Art Fair 2013

Oct 16-20th 2013n Regents Park

Zbyněk Baladrán is often described as an archeologist; he uncovers and studies artifacts from the past in order to better understand who we are today. His working materials have included found or donated historical film fragments, protest slogans collected in the aftermath of a street demonstration, diagrams of all kinds, images and texts clipped from old publications, and even his own philosophical musings. He painstakingly examines, and pieces together these various fragments into models that help us to confront the past, interpret the present, and build a line of progress toward the future.

Baladran’s project at Frieze is comprised of two major works. ‘Dialectical Figure’ is a spatial collage made up of texts, images and objects suspended in space. The fragile interconnected structures are visual diagrams of an open-ended and ongoing thought process that develops over time.  The seemingly casual and random components that create these constellations are like the individual pieces of a puzzle: each alone is abstract, but when placed together in composition they develop into a more meaningful larger picture.  In his work ‘Five Difficulties in the Writing the Truth’, made up of 107 black and white photographs, Baladrán is testing whether Bertolt Brecht’s dialectical approach of interpreting the world is still valid and can be of pertinent use in our contemporary society.

Zbyněk Baladrán (born 1973 in Prague, Czechoslovakia) is an author, visual artist and curator. He studied art history at the Charles University Philosophical Faculty in Prague from 1992-1996, and from 1997-2003 at the Prague Academy of Fine Arts in the studio of visual communication. He is one of the co-founders and curators of tranzitdisplay gallery. He was also the co-curator, with Vít Havránek, of the project and exhibitions Monument to Transformation, a 3-year research project on social transformation (2009-2011), and was also a part of the tranzit.org curatorial team for Manifesta 8, Murcia, Spain in 2010.  Baladrán’s new film Liberation or Alternatively was presented at the Czechoslovak Pavilion in Venice, and his 2009 video installation A Model of the Universe is being exhibited at the 2013 Biennale Cuvée in Linz.  He has an upcoming solo exhibition in Fotograf Gallery in Prague opening on October 22nd, and as a recipient of the 2013 Audi Award, will exhibit at the Artothek in Cologne in 2014.
