Czech Design at the London Design Festival 2014

13 – 21 September 2014: Czech design will be a significant feature of this year´s London Design Festival 2014. Demonstrating the long-standing tradition of excellent glassmaking and high quality craft, the exhibitions include the first London presentation of UMPRUM, the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design, Prague, with Glassmania, Young Czech Glass at Tent London and Clay Works!, an exhibition of porcelain and ceramics in the Brompton Design District.The showcase also includes the Oáza Collection, a collection of furniture and interior accessories; an ethereal glass design by the DECHEM Studio at Tent London and Elements of Craft, a curated selection of Czech design by Lina Kanafani at Mint.

GLASSMANIA; YOUNG CZECH GLASS

A student and recent graduate exhibition by the Studios of Glass and Product Design at UMPRUM, the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design, Prague. The project, led by designers Rony Plesl, and Michal Fronek and Jan Nemecek from the Olgoj Chorchoj Studio, presents two diverse approaches to glass: a logical, industrial approach, outcome of collaborations with companies such as Bomma and Lasvit, and a more experimental one employing both new glassmaking technologies and Czech glass traditions. The exhibition will also include the best graduate designs developed in partnership with Moser, Bohem and Preciosa. www.umprum.com

OÁZA COLLECTION

Designers Klara Sumova and Dirk Wright have internalised the concept of the oasis, a place of refuge and repose, in their Oáza Collection of furniture and interior accessories  to create calm within the home. Maple, marble, aluminium and other natural materials are combined with special surface treatments creating an unexpected harmony and encouraging contemplation. The collection is accompanied by a set of hand-cut glass lights, the Grit Collection, newly designed and developed for Preciosa chandelier manufacturers. www.oazacollection.com

DECHEM STUDIO

Introducing a selection of their existing products this is the first UK presentation by the DECHEM Studio established in Prague in 2012 by Michaela Tomiskova and Jakub Jandourek. Focused on product design, DECHEM pays special attention to glass, traditional bohemian craft techniques, and the surprising connections between its various forms. www.dechemstudio.com

CLAY WORKS!
13 – 21 September

The Studio of Ceramics and Porcelain from UMPRUM, the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design, Prague, under the leadership of Maxim Velcovsky and Milan Pekar, exhibits an experimental installation focusing on student research projects which examine the unique properties of porcelain and experimental manufacturing processes. www.umprum.cz

ELEMENTS OF CRAFT

Lina Kanafani curates an exhibition focusing on the influence of craft in design. Design classics from the 70s and 80s are set against works by over 50 established and emerging designers, many of whom are Czech designers, , to create a harmony of visual contrasts. Czech participants include Lasvit (the new lighting collection Frozen by Maxim Velcovsky); the Qubus Studio (Blown Press, Jakub Berdych’s collection of vases and bowls); the Křehky Studio (Jan Plechac & Henry Wielgus’s handmade leather swing); Klara Sumova (anodized aluminium stools and a personal mirror); Milan Pekar (glazed crystal vases) and recent design graduates. http://www.londondesignfestival.com/events/elements-craft
