Battalion with live piano accompaniment by Jiří Hradil

20 NOVEMBER 2011, 4 PM, BARBICAN CENTRE, SILK STREET, LONDON EC2Y 8DS. A much loved novel and play in its day based on the fortunes of a real-life reluctant hero who took on the legal system. Popular Czech singer Karel Hašler stars as the disillusioned lawyer who swaps his home for the ill-famed pub Battalion after finding his wife with a lover. He lives among the poor and drop-outs of Prague and when one of them is shot during a police raid, he becomes a key witness in the trial and challenges the legal system. A raw and effective film with an intellectual and emotional depth exceptional for its time.

Directed by Přemysl Pražský, Czechoslovakia, 1927, 75‘.
Cast: Karel Hašler, Bronislava Livia, Vladimír Pospíšil-Born, Karel Noll, Eman Fiala. Jiří Hradil is a member of well known bands Lesní zvěř and Prague alternative rockers Tata Bojs.
