9 FEBRUARY 2012 AT 7.30 PM (The Party and the Guests) and AT 9PM (Intimate Lighting), RIVERSIDE STUDIOS, CRISP ROAD, HAMMERSMITH, LONDON W6 9RL. Second Run DVD and Riverside Cinema present a specially curated double-bill featuring Ivan Passer’s comic gem Intimate Lighting and Jan Nemec's masterpiece of barbed and darkly sinister wit The Party and the Guests.

7.30 PM – THE PARTY AND THE GUESTS (O slavnosti a hostech)
Voted by critics as one of the Best Films of the 1960s, and distinguished by being 'banned forever' in its native Czechoslovakia, Němec's film is a biting satire of authoritarianism and conformity. With its astute observations of human nature, the film's universal relevance continues to this day.
Director: Jan Němec, Czechoslovakia 1966, 68 minutes
Czech language with English subtitles, Cert U

"A beautifully weighted absurdist allegory about conformity and the mechanics of totalitarianism which sounds echoes of Kafka, Ionesco, Buñuel and Václav Havel"
Sight & Sound

9.00 PM – INTIMATE LIGHTING (Intimní osvětlení)
Passer’s wonderfully subtle comedy is one of the finest works of the Czech New Wave. A successful musician returns to his small hometown to visit an old school friend who stayed to become a local music teacher. From this, Passer has forged something very rare: a genuine comedy of melancholy, which displays true affection for its characters to become a work of great originality and universal recognition.
Director: Ivan Passer, Czechoslovakia 1965, 72 minutes
Czech language with English subtitles, Cert PG

£9.50 (£8.50 concs.) for double bill
