Michael Žantovský in conversation with Adrian Dunbar: On Václav Havel

21 JULY 2014 - Beckett’s play Catastrophe was an act of solidarity with the imprisoned Václav Havel. The Czech Republic’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom, Michael Žantovský, discusses his biography of Havel (to be published in November) and charts the political background to Catastrophe - the arrest and imprisonment of artists and intellectuals in Eastern Europe. He also explains why the first production of the play at the Avignon Festival in 1982 was so controversial and celebrates the warm exchange of correspondence between Havel and Beckett.
