Diaries and Communities: Czech Underground Cinema of the 80s

20. 6. 2015, 18:00
Roberts Building, UCL University, WC1E 7JE

Underground film of the 1980s was an unseen and undiscovered area of Czech film history for many decades. The underground art community produced more than 80 short films shot on Super-8, with numerous directors, production companies and festivals, creating an almost entire small-scale industry parallel to the 80s state film industry. This talk by Martin Blažíček will introduce various documentary strategies and community practices of filmmaking within this area, utilizing examples from some recently restored films. Made in Prague UK Tour: Into the Clouds We Gaze (K oblakům vzhlížíme)

7. 7. 2015
18 Picturehouse Cinemas across UK

A beautifully shot observational film from established Czech documentarian Dušek (THE ANALOGS), this riveting study of a proud petrolhead living in Bohemia and the culture of aimless Czech youth around him combines shrewd observation and haunting imagery to paint a portrait of a very specific lifestyle and place in time. An at once funny, melancholic and lyrical portrait of boredom and stasis in one of the more remote areas of modern Europe. Screenings in Ritzy Picturehouse and Picturehouse Central in London will be introduced by director Martin Dušek and followed by Q&A.

Made in Prague UK Tour: Honeymoon (Líbánky)

28. 7. 2015
18 Picturehouse Cinemas across UK

Jan Hřebejk (INNOCENCE, DIVIDED WE FALL) directs this gripping drama about a rich society wedding thrown into chaos by the arrival of a stranger with a horrifying accusation to make; one which implicates the groom in a violent incident from the past. Beautifully acted by its expansive cast and shot with the elegance and clarity of a Robert Altman classic, the film recalls Dogma masterpiece FESTEN in its exploration of privilege, corruption and the horrible repercussions of suppressing ugly secrets from the past. At once acidly funny and painfully moving, HONEYMOON makes for compulsive viewing.
