Susanna Roth's 2015 Translators' Competition

17 NOVEMBER 2014 - The Czech Centre London in collaboration with the Literary Section of the Arts and Theatre Institute (IDU), Prague, is organising a competition for young translators up to 40 years of age with permanent residency in the UK who haven’t yet published a complete work of literature. The competition is in honour of the famous Swiss Czech specialist and translator Susana Roth (1950–1997), who contributed considerably to the promotion of contemporary Czech literature abroad.

Applicants are required to translate into English an extract from David Jan Žák’s book Návrat krále Šumavy, a biographical novel about the elusive people smuggler Josef Hasil (Labyrint, 2013) and email their translation together with a short biography to Renata Clark at the Czech Centre London clarkova@czechcentre.org.uk in  Word or PDF format by 5 p.m. on 31 January 2015.

The Susanna Roth 2015 Translators’ Competition is run by the Czech Centres in a number of European countries and languages. In each country a board of jurors will announce the winning translator by 31 March 2015. The winners of the national competitions will be invited to visit the Czech Republic in July 2015 and take part in a Czech studies seminar and a tranlation workshop.
