Barbora Balek @ Modern Panic X

Czech contemporary artist Barbora Balek exhibits at Modern Panic, an annual exhibition of surreal, controversial and provocative art curated by Guerrilla Zoo founder James Elphick. The exhibition brings together over 70 visual artists and live art practitioners offering a commentary on our contemporary world and the darker reaches of human nature with works that shock, disturb and confront. From Nowhere To Nowhere, Balek´s kinetic installation of an imaginary race course where dictators Hitler, Mao Zedong, Stalin and Kim Jong-un, who manipulated the course of the past century impacting the lives of millions, now become pawns on the boards themselves, fits right in.

Barbora Balek (*1978) is one of Czech Republic’s leading contemporary artists. She studied visual art, visual communication, new media and art therapy, finishing her training at the Academy of Fine Arts in 2006. In her work, she combines classical elements of paintings, photographs, sculptures and installations with new media. At the heart of her art lies the theme of individual human identity, its experience and variability through life. As a deeply committed artist, she also focuses on general social and political issues dealing with recent history as seen through individual and collective memory. In Europe, she has held over twenty solo exhibitions and took part in some fifty group shows. She was awarded several art prizes (the New Media Prize, the Reflex magazine Award…), and is represented in public and private collections.
