Bata-Ville: We Are Not Affraid of the Future
Travelogue? Documentary? Artwork? All of these, and more...
This remarkable feature follows 42 passengers - former employees of closed shoe factories in East Tilbury, Essex and Cumbria - on a coach trip across Europe, to the heart of the Bata shoe empire in the Czech Republic, where founder and visionary Tomas Bata, 'the Henry Ford of Eastern Europe', strove to create a collectivised utopia for his workers.
A bittersweet road movie, it's rendered memorable, not only by Pope and Guthrie's own on-screen personas (as 'travel hostesses', complete with distinctive costumes), but also by their unsparing yet sympathetic eye, their acute observation of what the trip means to the lives and futures of their passengers.
