BEDŘICHOVICE UPON THAMES marks the culmination of the five-year project of Kateřina Šedá, taking place in the South Moravian village of Bedřichovice in 2011–2015. The artist transposed the village to London in 2011. Eighty inhabitants of Bedřichovice had only one task in front of Tate Modern: to behave as if at home, from sweeping the pavement, washing the car, gardening or doing sports... However, London was not the end, but rather a starting point of the project. A new holiday was established in Bedřichovice on 3 September each year: the locals meet and take a joint photo, the village square and the Cultural Centre have gone through a substantial revitalization in the course of the five years. The village centre has been enriched with typical London features, and moreover it has undergone general refurbishment and improvement.

The participation of the town of Šlapanice and the following people in the revitalization of the village square and refurbishment of the Cultural Centre has been gratefully acknowledged: Radim Peško (visual identity, graphic design of publications and the square orientation system), Jitka Ressová/Ellement (architectural design of the square), David Zajíček (design of the square and Cultural Centre), Tomáš Dvořák (design of the Cultural Centre), Aleš Palán (Bedřichovice guidebook, Bedřichovice edition and texts), Martin Hlavica (photographer), Michal Hladík (photographer/joint photographs of Bedřichovice inhabitants), Jan Gogola Jr. (director of documentaries ‘Kateřina Šedá: Mythmaking’ and ‘Kateřina Šedá: Holidaymaking’), and many others.

The revitalization of the village square and refurbishment of the Cultural Centre has been financed from the resources of ROP South-East and the town of Šlapanice. We would like to thank all the organisations and individuals who have kindly supported the project either as sponsors, or in any other way.
