Burton Manor Study Weekend - The Symphonic Poem in the Czech and Slovak National Music

The 19th century saw the rise of the story-telling symphonic poem. The Czech and Slovaks made important and attractive contributions to this new genre, the subjects for which were largely derived from their national Romantic literature.

The pioneer work Smetana  will be examined, with special reference to his famous Ma vlast cycle. Dovark’s fine works, based upon the legendary tales of Karl Jaromir Erben will be central and the powerful examples by Janacek, including his link with Russian literature, will also be discussed. Includes some important works by later and less well-known composers.
