Close Up! November 1989 + Making History (screening + discussion)

Marking the 20th anniversary of Velvet Revolution this evening comprises of a screening of three newsreels from November 1989 followed by a panel discussion.

The student procession on the 17th November 1989 crushed by the armed police force stirred the whole nation and significantly contributed to the subsequent collapse of communism in Czechoslovakia. Three original newsreels captured the events with iconic images of policemen in white helmets holding truncheons, students with bare hands and demonstrators shaking key rings. UK premiere.

To mark the 20th anniversary of the Velvet Revolution the key representatives of its revolutionary forces - Michal Kocab, Czech Minister for Human Rights and Minorities and a founding member of the Civic Forum; Vaclav Bartuska, Czech Ambassador-at-Large for Energy Security and a former student leader and Jan Machacek, journalist and former dissident will recall their memories as well as reflect on events from today's perspective. The discussion will be chaired by Edward Lucas, Deputy Editor and Central and Eastern Europe correspondent for The Economist, who monitored the 1989 events for the Independent and the BBC.
