Czech Animation at the Puppet & Animation Festival

The focus for this year’s contribution towards the Puppet and Animation Festival is Eastern Europe post 1990. The film selection includes two new Czech films, Losers and One Night in One City, firmly grounded in the strong puppet traditions of Czech animation and a selection of films from the old masters Priit Pjarn, Jan Svankmajer and Garry Bardin, made during the momentous early 1990s. There is also an Eastern European connection to the films of Japanese animator, Kihachiro Kawamoto, as he was heavily influenced and studied under the great Czech animator Jiri Trnka.

One Night in One City

(Jedné noci v jednom meste)

Sat 12 Apr at 1.00pm

Jan Balej, Czech Republic 2007, 1h18m, DVD Czech with English subtitles, 18

A mosaic of mysterious and extraordinary stories of loneliness, set in a faded Prague apartment block, where the inhabitants indulge in bizarre hobbies such as dead insect circuses, urban bear hunts, pet cremations and donkey worship. Later, a fish and a tree share Christmas together.

This surreal parable is heavily influenced by the works of Jan Svankmajer, Jan Lenica and the Quay Brothers, but director Jan Balej takes things a stage further than any of his illustrious predecessors. Not even Svankmajer would have devised a scene where a zonked-out potato-head snorted ants along with his white powder! The stop-motion animation is intricate, the sets detailed and the story deranged.

Death of Stalinism in Bohemia

Jan Svankmajer, Czech Republic 1990, 9 minutes

A self confessed work of ‘agit-prop’, the celebrated master of Czech animation pays an ironic tribute to the events of 1990 which ended the reign of communism in his country.

The Losers

Wed 16 Apr at 5.45pm

Radek Beran, Czech Republic 2007, 1h3m, DVD Czech with English subtitles, 18

This bizarre, scatological puppet series for adults, from the Czech theatre group Cakes and Puppets, merges the worlds of Jan Svankmajer and David Lynch, in a tale of two brothers: one who heals the world through gastric irrigation and the other who prepares cruel revenge in the darkness of an insane asylum.
