Czech Showcase @ Fringe 2015: Boys Who Like to Play With Dolls

Welcome to a fantasy world in which masculinity and femininity are unrelated to male and female physical forms. Two distinctive, compelling European dancers, Ondrová and Šavel, morph from one body to another, attacking the conventions, norms and clichés of gender. Movement and dance become an expression of the contrast between the identity of body and soul, and between genetic givens and social prejudices, attempting to challenge the various social stereotypes and explore the theme of gender in a language of pure physicality. European Top 20 Priority Companies 2014 selected by Aerowaves.

Ondrová is one of the founders of the dance troupe VerTeDance, which has twice (in 2005 with Tichomluva, and in 2012 with Kolik váží vaše touha?) won the award for Dance Piece of the Year at the Czech Dance Platform, an annual festival dedicated to Czech contemporary dance and movement theatre. Ondrová was als awarded Dancer of the Year in 2010 for her performance with Anna Polívková.

Peter Šavel - a graduate from the Academy of Performing Arts in Bratislava in teaching modern dance. In 2010 Šavel also graduated  from P.A.R.T.S. in Brussels. He has danced in projects led by renowned Slovakian and foreign directors, including T. Hauerta, S. Sanchis, D. Zabrana, W. Vandekeybuse and A.T. de Keersmaeker. After attending P.A.R.T.S., Šavel began to focus on creating his own dances. The duet, “One for you, two for me“, created by Šavel and Stanislav Dobák, was chosen for the prestigious Aerowaves festival. Šavel currently lives in Brussels, where he works with the group Body Talker and the choreographer Pierre Droulersem.

ALT@RT has been run by Studio ALTA since 2007 and it has gradualy transformed from a studio into an intimate theatre. Studio ALTA has managed to create a truly open and accessible acting space. It is not dominated by one particular artist, but instead it is used by almost all of the most distinguished groups and individuals related to new theatre. Alt@RT works with disused theatres and studios and organises festivals, seminars, movement courses and ensures the provision of acting and dancing projects.
