Death of a Democrat

A screening of the 1992 television documentary about the death of Jan Masaryk will be introduced by its Associate Producer, Angela Spindler-Brown.

This month marks the 65th anniversary of Jan Masaryk’s fall to his death from his apartment in Prague’s Černín Palace. Retained in the Communist dominated Cabinet following the February coup d’état, did the popular Foreign Minister commit suicide in despair at the turn of events, or was he assassinated? Philip Whitehead’s acclaimed film examines the often conflicting evidence and includes interviews with many of Masaryk’s contemporaries, among them his nieces Herberta and Anna Masaryková, Pavel Tigrid, Henry Brandon, Victor Fischl, as well as the son of Masaryk’s great friend, Robert Bruce Lockhart. Jiří Kotlar, the procurator general who led the 1968 investigation which concluded that “no evidence of murder was found”, also makes an appearance. By providing two alternative endings, the documentary takes a neutral stand on this still controversial tragic event.

Free admission, but registration is necessary by e-mail to bcsa@bcsa.co.uk or by phone 020 8795 4875
