Divas & Scholars: The Women in Czech Opera

Samantha Crawford and Lada Valesova explore the female roles in the operas of the great Czech composers, Dvorak, Janacek and Smetana. During this entertaining and illuminating evening they will perform highlights and discuss the music and characterisation in depth. Afterwards there are limited spaces for a dinner with these two fascinating artists.

Katya Kabanova, Jenufa and Rusalka are the title roles in just three masterpieces in the Czech repertoire.  Katya is unhappily married and tormented by her bullying mother-in-law, Kabanicha.  This story of a lonely wife longing for love and freedom is rich in psychological insight.  Jenufa reveals the lives of two courageous women struggling for fulfilment in a small rural community.  Janacek movingly captures Jenufa’s emotional development, while her stepmother, the Kostelnicka is one of opera’s most complex maternal figures.  When Rusalka, Dvorak’s water nymph, falls in love with a mortal she strikes a terrible bargain with the witch Jezibaba to gain mortality herself.  This dark and symbolic retelling of the Little Mermaid story is enhanced by the spellbinding and luminous soprano aria, the famous Song to the Moon.

Lada Valesova is widely regarded as an expert on Czech and Russian opera, in demand as an opera role coach she works at the Royal Opera House and with many singers, Including Sir Willard White, Susan Bullock, Angela Gheorghiu and Natalia Rominiw.  A distinguished and multi prizewinning concert pianist, accompanist and recording artist she has performed in the most prestigious venues and features frequently on radio and television.  She Is also a professor at the Guildhall School of Music and Drama and a burgeoning conductor. Soprano Samantha Crawford was awarded the Golden Medal with Honours at the 2017 Berliner International Music Competition and 2017/18 NSW Wagner Society Award for Emerging Wagner Singers. In 2016 she won First Prize and the President's Prize at the Wagner Society Singing Competition in London. Critics have praised her performances as a singer 'whose fine cut soprano brought singing of class,' (Opera) and bringing 'a most complete portrayal,' to her roles (Financial Times).  Her recent performances at Teatro Real Madrid, Aldborough Festival, Garsington Opera, Glyndebourne  and Scottish Opera have attracted critical acclaim.
