DOT 504: Holdin Fast

‘The writhing dancers travel, serpentine and horizontal across the floor, coupling and recoupling, while petting and eroticised play becomes violent, constrictive mauling and the private agonies of those spurned.’

A dreamy ballad of sexual dependency is presented as a 50-minute-long performance by the DOT 504 Dance Company from Prague, Czech Republic. Plunge into the deepest visions of sexual fantasy, search for the physical and psychical possibilities of the human body.

The project was inspired by Czech-French author Milan Kundera’s novel The Unbearable Lightness of Being: The production, which combines contemporary dance with theatrical forms, was created in 2007 for a six strong company by Jozef Fruček (Slovakia) and Linda Kapetanea (Greece) – RootlessRoot Company (ex-members of Wim Vandekeybus‘ company Ultima Vez). The individual styles of both choreographers merge into the single choreografic gesture of Jozef Fruček’s mature direction and scenic writing and Linda Kapetanea’s sense for contact improvisation, with original music by Czech composer Ivan Acher.

HOLDIN` FAST, acclaimed by the critics as the highlight of the year, (October 2007) completed 20 performances in the Czech Republic and abroad (Warsaw, Athens, Bratislava). Following the Fringe festival performances, DOT 504 will perform at the dance-fair Tanzmesse in Düsseldorf (Germany) at the end of August 2008.

DOT 504 Dance Company

DOT 504 is a fully professional contemporary dance company from the Czech Republic. The company puts emphasis not only on the dancers’ technical skill, the expressive and physical aspects of contemporary dance, but also on the dancers‘ creativity. Choreographers who have created works for the company include: Jozef Fruček & Linda Kapetanea (RootlessRoot Company – Slovakia/Greece), Thomas Steyaert (Belgium) and Lenka Ottová (Czech republic) – the company’s artistic director.

The dancers of DOT 504 Helena Arenbergerová, Michaela Ottová, Lenka Vágnerová, Pavel Mašek, Petr Opavský and Daniel Raček, who are all among the best contemporary Czech dancers, have more than risen to the occasion. Arenbergerová was nominated for the Thálie Award for her interpretation of this project. Petr Opavský is also a Thálie Award nominee. This award is the Czech parallel of the Academy award in theatrical, opera and ballet art.
