Emily Howard: Composition and Collaboration

Second Movement is delighted to be working with leading young composer Emily Howard on *Zatopek!* a new 12 minute opera inspired by the extraordinary life and times of legendary Czech Olympian Emil Zatopek. This new work has been chosen as part of New Music 20 x 12 an independent commissioning programme initiated by Jillian Barker and David Cohen, and delivered by PRS for Music Foundation in partnership with the BBC, The London Organising Committee of the Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, and Sound and Music.Second Movement will be working in partnership with Liverpool Philharmonic on the realisation of *Zatopek!* and its premiere in Liverpool, Emily's home city, in June 2012.

Emily has recently completed a new piano concerto commissioned by the Liverpool Mozart Orchestra with funds from the PRS for Music Foundation and composed for pianist Alexandra Dariescu . She is also developing Out of the Blue, a new dancer/choreographer - composer initiative in collaboration with the BBC Philharmonic.

On 23rd May as part of a concert series in support of the Nicholas Boas Charitable Trust at 22 Mansfield Street Emily will be in conversation with Alexandra Dariescu and members of Second Movement about the genesis of these new works. This unique insight into the compositional and collaborative process will be accompanied by a recital by Alexandra, recent winner of the
Guildhall Wigmore Recital Prize, of a selection of Chopin's piano works and a performance from Out of the Blue.
