Fimfarum

Animated feature-film from the Czech Republic which was made over 17 years and finally finished in 2002. The film comprises of a series of five fairytales based on the legendary book of the same name by Jan Werich.

The beloved Czech storyteller’s cautionary adult fairytales are brought beguilingly to life with puppets and drawings in a gloriously twisted style.

There are many themes running through this collection, but broadly the film deals with depression, gambling, alcoholism, wife beating, attempted murder, devil worship and incontinence.

The five shorts are stitched together by a pleasantly jovial storyteller, but make no mistake; these are most definitely not stories for children’s bedtime. ‘When The Leaves Fall from the Oak’ finds a farmer worming his way out of a pact with a fussy devil, ‘Fearless Francis’ tells of a pub full of dead card-players and a publican released by three slaps, while ‘Stingy Barka’ is a woman so mean she saves her old sausage skins for use as curtains. ‘A Dream Fulfilled’ is about a man trying to use his dreams to win a fortune on the lottery and ‘Fimfarum’ tells of a cuckolded blacksmith, and the deal he makes with the devil to get revenge.

Jan Werich Fimfarum screens as part of the London International Animation Festival (LIAF) on Sunday August 29th at 9pm.
