Frank Reiss - The Son of the Perpetrator, The Son of the Victim. The Story of an Unusual Friendship.

A moving film, directed by Wolfgang Schoen, documenting the story of a remarkable friendship rising from the ashes of the Holocaust. With personal commentary from ‘The Son of the Victim’, Frank Reiss.

Frank Reiss was born in Berlin and fled Germany with his parents in 1937, through Austria to Czechoslovakia. Frank's father died in Majdanek. His mother, a member of the underground, was caught and executed in Warsaw. Aged seven, Frank and his guardian, Simon Polak, escaped to the Czechoslovakian countryside, where they paid local farmers to hide them.

Frank was a prisoner in Terezín, when the camp was liberated by the Russians. Trapped in communist Czechoslovakia, Frank graduated from Bratislava School of Law with a Doctorate. He practiced law in Prague until the Prague Spring in 1968 when he fled to the United States. He later obtained a Masters Degree in Social Work from Adelphi University.

In the 1980s Frank was Director of European Affairs of the Anti-Defamation League. He has been a consultant to President Václav Havel of the Czech and Slovak Federated Republic and is currently the Representative for Foreign Affairs for the Václav and Dagmar Havel Foundation.


Frank has lectured at universities in the United States and the Holocaust Museum in Washington, D.C. and has been involved in producing four documentary films based on his personal and professional experience of the Holocaust.including The Journey of Butterfly (1996) and The Return of the Lost Citizens of Hechingen (1998)
