Freedom in the Air

Freedom in the Air, to be published by Pen and Sword Books in August, tells the remarkable story of a Czech airman, Václav Robert Bozděch, whose dog, Antis, flew with him in WW2 with Bomber Command. The two were inseparable; Antis was twice wounded by enemy fire, later saved his master’s life and was awarded the Dickin Medal (the animals’ VC) by Field Marshall Wavell.

After the war, both returned to Czechoslovakia, but after the communist coup Bozděch  was forced to flee, taking Antis with him.

Based on archive material in the UK and the Czech Republic, private papers and interviews, Hamish Ross has constructed an absorbing story, dealing with a little know aspect of the Second World War and its aftermath, bringing out timeless themes of loyalty, separation and loss.
