My Night with Philosophers presents Jan Sokol

Czech philosopher Jan Sokol will be one of the many internationally acclaimed European philosophers discussing at this year´s edition of the annual My Night with Philosophers. Sokol's topic for the night is "Phenomenology of liberty".

The Institut français in London is hosting the second edition of My Night with Philosophers, a philosophy all-nighter from 7pm to 7am, on 7 June 2013.

Among over a hundred events  - ranging from discussions to performances, lectures to films, live readings to recitals -  this new edition will highlight British and European philosophers of today. One panel will specifically invite European philosophers to discuss the concept of EU citizenship to enrich the public debate. This special event is organised in partnership with BBC 3 and La Vie des Idées.

What is time? Is technology beyond our control? Does reality exist? How do you tame a zombie? Get ready to explore all these questions and many more, as 60 British, French and European philosophers descend on the Institut français on 7 June for a whole night of thinking, discovering and discussing. With conferences, performances, round-table discussions, films, My Night with Philosophers is back and will keep you wide awake and yearning for more.

Jan Sokol (born April 18, 1936) is a Czech philosopher, former dissident, politician and translator. From 1990 to 1992 he was a Member of Parliament, in 1998 Minister of Education and at the 2003 election he was coalition candidate for the President of the Czech Republic. From 2000 to 2007 he served as the first dean of the Faculty of Humanities at the Charles University in Prague.
At this year's My Night with Philosophers, Jan Sokol will discuss the topic of "Phenomenology of liberty".

"For us former dissidents liberty remains a fascinating topic, whereas others seem to consider it as a banality. But are we speaking about the same thing? What about the famous "Pardox of liberty": liberty without rules is anarchy, whereas rules restrict our liberty? Instead of speculating, let us take a closer look at our own experience(s) of liberty."

Jan Sokol will talk at My Night with Philosophers from 10.30 pm to 10.50 pm.
