Juraj Herz Double Bill: The Cremator + Morgiana

A DVD premiere of Juraj Herz´s stunning gothic melodrama Morgiana in a double bill with his classic The Cremator.

7 pm

Juraj Herz, Czechoslovakia 1968,  95

(Rudolf Hrušinský, Vlasta Chramostová, Jana Stehnová)

Juraj Herzs film The Cremator has been described in many ways - as surrealist-inspired horror, as expressionist fantasy, as a dark and disturbing tale of terror. This brilliantly chilling film, a mix of Dr Strangelove and Repulsion, is set in Prague during the Nazi occupation. It tells the story of Karl Kopfrkingl, a professional cremator, for whom the political climate allows free rein to indulge his increasingly deranged ideas for the salvation of the world.

“An enjoyably strange, undoubtedly original and occasionally terrifying film” - Channel 4 Film Guide

Sitges Film Festival 1972 - Best Actor

9 pm

Juraj Herz , Czechoslovakia 1972,  97

(Iva Janžurová, Josef Abrhám, Nina Divíšková)

With delirious visuals conjured by cinematographer Jaroslav Kučera (Daisies), Juraj Herzs surreal phantasmagoria of dark desires and splintered minds is a twisted Czech take on What Ever Happened to Baby Jane? Set in a decadent 19th century, Morgiana is the story of two sisters. Klára is auburn-haired and beautiful; Viktoria is wicked, sadistic, bursting with hate and jealousy - and plotting to poison her more popular sibling...Part fairy-tale, part Gothic horror, Morgiana is a full-blown hallucinatory experience from the director of the terrifying The Cremator.

“An elegant, beautifully-executed, post-60s essay on sex and repression” Time Out
