IKON Research Residency: Kateřina Šedá

The Ikon gallery will host Czech conceptual and social artist Kateřina Šedá while she undertakes research in Birmingham towards her major project for the gallery which will take place in the autumn of 2020. Her residence follows a previous visit in 2017 when she focused on the local canal network, especially as it cut through Ladywood, a central city district characterised by a large transient population of refugees and asylum seekers.

Šedá will use Ikon Slow Boat (a converted narrow boat) as a floating studio space from which to consider Birmingham’s demographics - Ladywood especially. During which time she will meet a variety of people living and working in Birmingham - particularly those involved in the resettlement of refugees - in order to gain perspective on the social trends and associated challenges.

In light of Šedá’s recent work, most notably for the 2018 Venice Biennale of Architecture, this project anticipates the 2021 Census of Population and Housing in England and Wales. Whilst in Birmingham, Šedá will visit heritage sites managed by the Canal and Rivers Trust, who have strategic plans to attract tourism to the city centre, which together contribute to the already diverse landscape of urban regeneration, mixing social housing and luxury apartments.

There will be two public events marking Šedá’s residency. The first on Wednesday 25 September, 4-5pm where audiences can Meet the Artist for an informal drop-in session to find out more about her practice and research. On Friday 11 October, 6-8pm Šedá will present her Research Findings from the residency.
