Call for Writers: Literary Residency in Aberystwyth

The Czech Centre London and the Arts Institute in Prague invite novelists and poets to apply for literary residency in Aberystwyth, Wales, taking place between 1st and 30th September 2014 and hosted by the literary platform Wales Literature Exchange. Authors residing in the Czech Republic who have published at least one book are welcome to apply for this stay, offering rich cultural programme and gathering of many literary personas from around the world, by 2 May.

Czech Centre London and Arts Institute call for writers for a month-long arts residency in the field of literary production in Aberystwyth (Wales, UK) for September 2014.

The residency is open to poets and novelists who reside or work in the Czech Republic and who have published at least one book. Accommodation, travel expenses to / from Wales and additional costs associated with the stay in the amount of CZK 15,000 will be covered.

Author will be housed in a period private house in a quiet location in the centre of Aberystwyth. The house is within walking distance of the railway station, the seafront, shops, restaurants, the University, National Library of Wales, Welsh Books Council, Aberystwyth Arts Centre etc. It will be used for residential purposes (single room with desk, private bathroom, shared kitchen, with wifi internet access). 

The residency is hosted by Wales Literature Exchange. The Exchange was established in 2000 to promote the translation of Welsh literature abroad and foster links between Wales and the publishing industry worldwide. It works with writers, translators and publishers to bring literature from Wales to readers around the world, and world literature to Wales. The Exchange is based at the Institute of Literature, Languages and the Creative Arts at Aberystwyth University. The University is home to an award-winning Arts Centre and Aberystwyth itself is the home of one of the few copyright libraries in the UK, The National Library of Wales.

Writers and translators in residence welcomed by the Exchange are always personally taken care of and are introduced to the local cultural scene. A programme is created in discussion with the artist and according to each artist’s individual interests.

Artists can use all the services provided by the host organization (these may include readings, interviews, contacts with authors, translators, publishers, literary critics, etc.).They will have access to office space and support within the host organization premises, and access will be organised to the reading rooms at The National Library of Wales as well as lending rights for Aberystwyth University library, both within walking distance.

Application must contain:

I. The application form, legibly filled in all its points

II. Attachments  

a) Motivation letter in both Czech and English explaining author´s expectations and describing the objectives, plan of work etc. (two pages maximum)

b) Professional CV of the applicant both in Czech and in English.

c) Summary of written and published work

Deadline for applications: 2 May 2014

Incomplete, incorrect or late-submited applications will not be passed to the selection process. 
Applications will be evaluated by the expert jury and all the applicants will be informed about the result until May 12 2014.
Selected writer will carry out final report about the residency within 2 weeks after his stay.
