An Illustrated Lecture: Many Nations - the Schwarzenberg collection of costume miniatures at Český Krumlov castle

Following on from last year’s lecture by Lucy Abel-Smith about great houses and castles designed for show and entertainment, Kateřina Cichrová will speak about the remarkable collection of costume miniatures commissioned by Prince Ferdinand Eusebius Schwarzenberg (1652 – 1703) to inspire those attending masked balls held in the private Baroque theatre and reception rooms of Český Krumlov Castle during the 17th and 18th centuries.

The 60 designs in guache on parchment show costumes from countries across Europe, Persia and the Far East, as well as from opera and the commedia dell’arte. The lecture will set the collection within the historical context of the Schwarzenberg family’s important cultural legacy in Bohemia, which includes a number of great houses and castles containing significant collections.
The miniatures were to have been exhibited at the Handel House Museum in London this autumn, but were prevented at the last moment from leaving their country by the Czech government. Our lecturer was the curator of the exhibition which had already been shown at České Budĕjovice, where she is based in the South Bohemia regional office of the Czech National Heritage Institute, and is curator of decorative arts collections and a specialist in conservation. It was under her leadership that the award-winning restoration of costumes and decorations of the Český Krumlov theatre was completed in 2002.

The cost of the evening is £15 per person which includes the lecture, drinks and an £8.00 donation to The Friends
of Castle Sychrov (UK).*
