May We Kiss?

Share a lovely Czech tradition and kiss a loved one under a cherry tree in front of the Czech Centre.

First of May is traditionally celebrated as the Day of Love in the Czech Republic and people - young and old - like to kiss under cherry trees in full bloom and recite Karel Hynek Mácha's poem May (or more likely paraphrase the first verse:).

We think London also deserves a bit of spring welcoming and love celebrating, so on the 1st of May, for one day only, we will install a cherry tree in front of the Czech Embassy building under which you can kiss your dear one, or just hug or smile… And for those who would like to take home a souvenir, Eliška Kyselková, a cutting edge fashion photographer, will be at hand to snap a picture for you!

May We Kiss? is inspired by a project created by studio MAK! for Prague's borrough Letná, aiming to strenghten the community feel through sharing kisses (or handshakes) under a cherry tree among neighbours and friends. In 2018, the Czech Republic is celebrating its 100 year anniversary and inviting people in the UK to share this lovely tradition with us is one of the ways we want to mark this anniversary.

There will be music, drinks and Czech refreshments from 7pm-9pm.
