Czech Design at London Design Festival: Oáza Collection
The oasis is an external place of refuge and repose. Designers Klára Šumová and Dirk Wright have internalised this concept with Oáza, a collection of furniture and interior accessories creating calm within the home. Maple, marble, aluminium and other natural materials are combined with special surface treatments such as galvanising and anodising, creating unexpected harmony and contemplative results. The Oáza collection is accompanied by a set of hand-cut glass lights, the ‘Grid’ collection, newly designed and developed for Preciosa chandelier manufacturers.

Klára Šumová (CZ)
Klára is an independent product and interior designer based in Prague, with works extending to the northern Czech Republic. In 2011 she graduated from the Academy of Arts, Architecture and Design in Prague. She has worked and studied in Stockholm (Note Design Studio), the Netherlands (Kiki van Eijk), Canada and Hungary, providing research experiences that continue to inform her design process. In addition to her self-initiated projects, she collaborates frequently with manufacturers, craftsmen, galleries, and various modes of production. Recent commissions include participation in the Craft & Drawing exhibition during Depot Basel, chandeliers for Preciosa, collaboration with Bakalowits during Passionswege – Vienna design week, window designs in Prague for Hermés and Pietro Fillipi, exhibition curations and ongoing contributions to lifestyle magazines.
Her interests are primarily in the connections of individual cultures and the uses of objects that span generations. There is special consideration to the histories of surrounding ourselves with certain timeless elements, built collectively with what nature provides. Klára primarily uses raw materials and combines them with moments of human nature, allowing the details of these intimate relationships to give rise to physical form.
Dirk Wright (CA)
Dirk is a freelance graphic designer based in London and Prague, working primarily with artists, designers and cultural institutions. Be it visual identities, publications or installations, his conceptually-grounded outputs are influenced by traditional craft and progressive technology. Evidence of this diverse approach can be seen in the branding for Matchstick coffee (Vancouver) and Bohemia Apartments (Prague), cover design for the Russian edition of Rem Koolhaas' Delirious New York, and product application in Oáza – a furniture collection launched in Prague with Klára Šumová.
His work experience includes design assistance for OK-RM (London) with projects for Strelka Press (Moscow) and Kaleidoscope Magazine (Milan). He was most recently in a supporting role to Matthew Appleton/Modern Activity, with London-based clients including the Contemporary Art Society, Book Works, ArtAngel, and Rizzoli (NY).
