Closely Observed Trains @ Curzon Wimbledon

New Wave film about a shy apprentice at a village train station navigating love-life difficulties in German-occupied Czechoslovakia during WW2. Conceived as the country was steering towards1968's Prague Spring, the film cunningly uses the Nazis as stand-ins for the Soviets, while ordinary people try to get on with their lives. Gorgeously filmed in black-and-white with poignant charm and gentle humour. Oscar for Best Foreign Language Film.

“ ...the triumph of the film is to show us that our petty destinies are inextricably linked to bigger events outside our lives and that we can never escape them. ... Menzel's love of small detail and his tenderness towards his characters leaves in almost everything your average Hollywood editor would cut ... quietly uproarious.” Derek Malcolm, Guardian

Directed by Jiří Menzel. Czechoslovakia, 1966. 92 mins (15)

Starring: Václav Neckár, Josef Somr, Vlastimil Brodský
