A solo show by leading UK-based Czech artist.
In his capacity as artist, lecturer and writer, Pavel Büchler continues to be an influential presence in British contemporary art.
Summing up his own practice as "making nothing happen", he is committed to the catalytic nature of art - its potential to draw attention to the obvious and revealing it as ultimately strange.
Having exhibited extensively both in the UK and abroad, this is Büchler's first solo exhibition in the UK since his show at the Portfolio Gallery, Edinburgh, in 1997.
Recent exhibitions (all 2004) include 'Incommunicado', curated for National Touring Exhibitions by Margot Heller, Director, South London Gallery, touring to City Art Centre, Edinburgh and Cornerhouse, Manchester, amongst other venues ; and 'Tonight', Studio Voltaire, London, curated by Paul O'Neill.
A co-founder of the Cambridge Darkroom, one of the first spaces in the UK devoted to artists' photography, Büchler went on to become Head of the School of Fine Art at Glasgow School of Art (1992-96) and, since 1997, has been Research Professor in Art and Design at Manchester Metropolitan University.
'Ghost Stories', a collection of Büchler's writings on photography and film, was published by Proboscis, London, in 1999. A monograph on his work, 'Conversation Pieces', was published by International 3 last year.
Büchler's exhibition will coincide with 'Art Fortnight London' (21 June - 5 July) , a programme of exhibitions and events "celebrating London's pre-eminence as the centre of the international art market and its reputation as the trend-setting art and culture capital of the world."
As part of 'Art Fortnight London', Büchler will be discussing different approaches to and definitions of interdisciplinary practice in contemporary art with artist, writer and curator Paul O'Neill and curator, writer and critic Sacha Craddock at Bonham's, 101 New Bond Street, London W1, on Wednesday, June 23rd, (date of preview at Program) at 4.00 p.m.
