Petr Stanický: Evocations

The V&A Museum shows two site-specific installations by Czech artist Petr Stanicky, as part of the London Design Festival 2017. Petr Stanicky (born 1975) is a classically trained sculptor who works predominantly in glass. His work is architectural in nature and is concerned with space, light, and reflection and the opportunities derived from the material he uses and the specific spaces for which he creates his works.

For Evocations, two site specific installations at the V&A, Stanicky took his inspiration from the complex and artificial architectural lobby-spaces outside to ceramics and glass galleries. These spaces, built in glass, steel and concrete, sit in between and connect different parts of the historic Museum buildings, and Stanicky’s works interact with and emphasise their complex nature and beauty.

Pylon is a highly reflective geometrical structure of steel and glass, incorporating three square, found triple-glazing units. Multiple reflections create illusionary structures which incorporate parts of the surrounding architecture.

Penetration is constructed from steel reinforcing mesh and found, industrial borosilicate glass tubes. The work invites the viewer to look through its structure at the monumental skyscape beyond. The work, and the surroundings with which it interacts, combine to create a partly illusionary world, which changes constantly with the beautiful September light which floods the space.

This is the first time that the work of Stanicky is on public show in London and Reino Liefkes, Head of Ceramics and Glass is extremely excited to host these two spectacular installations by one of Europe’s leading glass artists.

Evocations can be seen during the London design Festival from 16th until 24th September at the V&A Museum

“These works exist at a crossroads that lies between genuine shapes and forms, and those merely suggested by the sculptures’ imaginative illusory evocations. The mirroring effect of their glass surfaces; the juxtaposing of flat planes and dimensionality, stemming from a stratified mesh of metal; and the accompanying enigmatic walls of glass, draw the observer into a variegated world.” Petr Stanický
