Piano Eccentric

Jazz music in combination with classical elements and traditional folk sources from each country.

Piano Eccentric (Part 1)

5 May, 7.30 pm

Presents Central European pianists Jan Hajnal, Olah Kalman and Emil Viklicky, Miki Skuta.

Jazz Pianist Kalman Olah has gained an international reputation as an artist who masterfully combines the elements of jazz, folk and contemporary classical music. Kalman’s versality as a performer is demonstrated by his passion for expanding musical boundaries and his ever-lasting quest for new forms of self-expression.

Musically, Jan Hajnal combines the simple stands next to the more complex, and creates something beautiful, for example the simple form of the blues, enriched by complex harmonies, tonal shifts and new rhythms.  Hajnal’s view of folklore is enriched by the music of Bartok, Szymanowski, Janacek to name but a few.

Piano Eccentric (Part 2)

25 May, 7.30 pm

As a composer Viklicky has attracted attention abroad primarily for having created a synthesis of the expressive elements of modern jazz with the melodicism and tonalities of Moravian folk song that is distinctly individual in contemporary jazz. Viklicky’s work has gained him a number of prestigious awards.

Pianist Miki Skuta is an all-out gifted artist and composer who has performed not only classical music compositions but also other genres such as jazz and pop music.  Skuta approaches each of the variations with the clear intent of revealing its poetry and individuality. In this way he reveals the richly varied contrasts within the work as a whole.
