Film retrospective of Czech director Jaromil Jires.

4 July 6pm

Hall of Lost Footsteps

Echoes of war, concentration camps and particularly the atomic bomb in Hirosima are juxtaposed with the lives of people living in peace who are threatened only by atomic weapons testing.

The Cry

Jireš's charming debut deals with the life of Slávek and Ivana who are expecting their first child. They reflect on their life as a couple whilst they wait for the baby. With Ivana in a labour ward, anxious Slávek goes back to work and suddenly finds himself more aware of the cynicism, hypocrisy and racism of other people

11 July 6pm

The Joke

Even after 15 years Ludvík hasn’t overcome the consequences of the student joke for which he was expelled from university and the communist party and sent to a labour camp. He revenges himself on his former best friend, responsible for his misfortune, by seducing his wife, only to be faced at his victorious moment by one of life’s many jokes. Based on the novel by Milan Kundera.

18 July 6pm

Valerie and Her Week of Wonders

Jireš’s haunting evocation of a girl’s emergence into womanhood is based on the ‘black’ novel by the surrealist poet, Vítězslav Nezval. A mixture of eroticism and gothic horror, it focuses on the adventures of a 13-year-old girl living with her austere grandmother.

25 July 6pm

The Dance Master

A young dance instructor diagnosed with tuberculosis arrives at a sanitarium for his treatment. Fighting the illness with an innate optimism and dancing despite having already been expelled from two institutions, he wins over the other patients who have passively accepted the terms imposed on them by strict institutional discipline.
