Made in Prague Festival: Jan Němec Retrospective

The 21st edition of the Made in Prague Festival showcases the first UK retrospective of the leading Czech filmmaker and enfant terrible of the Czechoslovak New Wave Jan Němec (1936 -2016).

Renowned for his award winning films Diamonds of the Night and The Party and the Guests, Jan Němec, has constantly challenged himself reinventing his style and moving from literary adaptations to more personal topics and auteur cinema. Never sentimental or nostalgic, endlessly ironic and self-mocking, Němec’s films radiate his endless energy and fascination with life and film as seen in his swansong, The Wolf of Royal Vineyard Street, premiered at the 2017 Rotterdam International Film Festival.

An accompanying exhibition of digital black & white photographs from his unfinished film essay What is behind that Wall? will introduce Jan Němec as a keen and captivating photographer while providing a wider context to his work.

As a contemporary counterpoint to the retrospective the festival features Highlights of Czech Cinema including an exclusive premiere of the thrilling HBO series Wasteland; Czech nominees for an Academy Award for Best Foreign Fiction Film Ice Mother and for a European Film Academy Award The Teacher.
