Roma in Slovakia, the Czech Republic and Wider Europe: past and present

A talk by Dr Brearley who will concentrate on the Roma of the two republics, albeit set within the broader European context. She will outline their history from their earliest arrival until today, including discussion of their fate during World War II. As well as mentioning their language, customs, creativity and rich culture, she will touch on their persecution and their survival strategies, matters of some urgency given recent worrying developments. A former lecturer at the University of Birmingham, Dr Brearley has taught and published widely on anti-Judaism, genocide and Roma issues.

Refreshments will be served following the talk.
