Shoemakers to the World

The Bata Estate on the Essex Marches 1939-1960

In the 1930's, the Bata company bought land at East Tilbury in order to establish a shoe factory. Around the factory a garden village was laid out, its plan and some of its buildings the work of the architects employed by Tomas Bata to design his utopian town of Zlin in Moravia.

Former Director of the BBC World Service and now Director of the Barbican Centre, Sir John Tusa will reveal the fascinating history of the Bata Estate and the community that evolved there.
