Spotlights: Markéta Luskačová

The acclaimed Czech photographer Markéta Luskačová presents a concise retrospective of her work at Tate Britain. The first Czech artist to be featured in the gallery´s regularly changing Spotlights series, she will display over sixty photographs spanning five decades of photographing daily life in Czechoslovakia and the UK.

Luskačová who lives and works in London, was born in Prague where she studied sociology of culture at Charles University and photography at FAMU, Prague. Since 1968 she has been working as a freelance photographer. Working on the Pilgrims Series brought her to Slovakian village Šumiac where she photographed life in the enduring village communities relatively untouched by the communist regime. In 1971 Pilgrims were exhibited in Prague, in Theatre Beyond the Gate, where they were spotted by the editor of Creative Camera, Colin Osman who was visiting from London. His magazine published them and brought Markéta's work to the international attention. The collection would also later be shown in London at the Victoria & Albert Museum in 1983.

When she emigrated to London she concentrated to reflect on a changing city in her portraits of London life. Everything she diligently photographed through the 70s, 80s and 90s and to a lesser degree, up to a present day, is a record of the changing faces of London street life – be it buskers on Portobello road, or Jewish markets and children playing in the street.

In 1991, Markéta had a one-woman exhibition at the Whitechapel Gallery called Photographs from Spitalfields. This exhibition cemented her reputation as a vital photographic talent.

Fellow photographer Roger Mayne told her long time ago: "The intention in mind must be to make a record and then an accident of having made the right record at the right time may produce ART." In Luskačová's case it did indeed.
