Revival supported (2005) by The Friends of Covent Garden.

Village life: peaceful, sleepy, uneventful... Wrong.

Francesca Zambello's popular production of this boisterous comedy returns in Kit Hesketh Harvey's English translation, with all the Technicolor brilliance of Alison Chitty's designs.

Smetana's infectiously tuneful score, infused with Czech folk melodies and dance rhythms, is again conducted by Charles Mackerras, while the cast is led once more by Susan Gritton in the title role as the peasant girl Marenka, who is ruinously in love with the penniless Jeník (Simon O'Neill in his role debut).

Thanks to the machinations of the haggling marriage broker Kecal (Peter Rose, and Jeremy White), who is trying to hoodwink Jeník, she finds herself plotting to save herself from ending up with rich, nice but dim,Vašek (Timothy Robinson returning to the role).

Throw in a travelling circus (Robert Tear and Yvette Bonner once again as the Ringmaster and the alluring Esmeralda), and even a bear to terrorize the villagers, and an evening of merriment and mayhem is guaranteed.
