The Emperor of Atlantis is a powerful piece of music-theatre that satirises a world where life and death have lost all meaning. Written in the Terezin concentration camp in 1943 by the Czech-Jewish composer, Viktor Ullmann, it takes a look at the Holocaust from an absurdist perspective using an astonishing mix of musical styles. Both composer and librettist were sent to their deaths in
Auschwitz following the first public dress rehearsal. Re-discovered in the 1970’s, it is a courageous work that demands the attention of London’s music world in this long overdue revival. This is the opening production of Dioneo, a new opera company committed to
imaginative stagings of contemporary or lesser-known works.
The cast includes current and former students of the Guildhall School of Music, Royal Academy of Music and Trinity College of Music under the musical direction of John Murton whose conducting credits includes Gianni Schicchi, Die Zauberflote, Hansel and Gretel. This new production is directed by Max Höhn (The Master and Margarita, Battersea Arts Centre and Edinburgh Fringe 2010), whose assistant work includes The Rape of Lucretia (Theater an der Wien, prod. Keith Warner) and Rodelinda (RCM, prod. David Fielding). The designer is Valentina Ricci, whose credits include La Didone (La Fenice, Venice).
Booking is now open, and the company is inviting reviewers and members of the press to contact the producer to arrange press tickets: brian@dioneo.org.
