The Martinů Quartet - UK Tour

The Martinů Quartet, originally the Havlák Quartet, was formed in 1976 by students of the Prague Conservatoire, inspired by and modelled on such Czech quartets as the Vlach and the Smetana. As a young quartet they harvested seven prizes at important international competitions – the start of a brilliant international career. They renamed themselves in 1985 reflecting their commitment to promote the work of one of the great masters of Czech music, Bohuslav Martinů – and made prize-winning recordings of his quartets. The Quartet takes pleasure in seeking out neglected works and in giving first performances of pieces by contemporary composers. A long-term project involves performing and recording the complete quartet output of the leading Czech composer resident in the USA, Tomáš Svoboda.

The Martinů Quartet played...with such extraordinary homogeneity of sound and technical ease that their reading sounded deceptively laid back. ...  [they] showed their gift for finding the emotional heart of a piece. This was an exquisitely crafted and profoundly moving performance.  The Strad Magazine
