The Interpreter + Q&A with director Martin Šulík

An odd-couple road trip featuring the son of a Nazi officer with his translator, an older Jewish Slovak who believes the officer murdered his family.

Ali Ungár (Jiri Menzel), an 80-year-old-translator, travels to Vienna to look for the former SS officer responsible for his parents’ execution but finds only his son Georg (Toni Erdmann’s Peter Simonischek). Intrigued by the visit and his father´s letters from his time in Slovakia Georg hires Uli to help him trace his father’s journey. Embarking on a road trip to find witnesses to the past, an uneasy relationship between the dignified and often disapproving Uli and the gregarious and hedonistic Georg transforms into a solid friendship as the two travel through the moral and historical territory. Part odd-couple comedy, part study of contrasting personalities with superb chemistry between the two leads, this is a deeply moving journey of unexpected discoveries and healing.
