Up and Down
Jan Hrebejk's latest film at the Edinburgh International Film Festival.
Ferrying illegal refugees across the Czech border at night, two petty criminals are horrified to discover a baby left behind in their van - a surprise which alters not only the trajectory of their own lives, but also of many others around them, from a childless Prague couple (who purchase the abandoned infant), to a gang of urban pickpockets, to a bourgeois family bitterly divided after the death of their patriarch, a famous professor.
Cutting smoothly between these parallel storylines, director Hrebejk and his screenwriter Petr Jarchovsky have crafted a work of remarkable insight and power, reminiscent of (and equal to) Robert Altman's Short Cuts.
