Tribute to Věra Chytilová

The Czech Centre, Dazed & Confused, Picturehouse and Second Run DVD present a double bill of Chytilová’s anarchic and wildly satirical masterpiece Daisies and Martin Šulík’s documentary portrait Věra Chytilová from the Golden Sixties series in tribute to director Věra Chytilová (2 February 1929 – 12 March 2014), pioneer of the Czech New Wave. Introduced by Dazed & Confused film critic Carmen Gray.

"Extremely funny, witty and expertly-fashioned film… displays a remarkable control of filmic language, special effects, rhythm and sight gags"

An exercise in avant-garde cinema that is freshly humorous and accessible, Daisies is a dark comedy which concerns the pranks of two girls, Marie I and Marie II, who in response to the world being “spoiled”, decide to go bad destroying the life around them. Outrageous décor and dazzling cinematography play integral part in this nihilistic tale of senseless provocation. Considered Chytilová’s masterpiece and a key film of the Czech New Wave, Daisies was banned and director Věra Chytilová forbidden to work until 1976.

Winner: Grand Prix, Bergamo International Film Festival 1967
