Vilem Precan: Czechoslovakia in a Divided World 1948 –1968 –1989

For Czech history the number 8 has an almost mystical significance as it occurs in so many fateful years - the establishment of Czechoslovakia - 1918; Munich - 1938; the coup d’etat of 1948 and the 1968 Prague Spring. Historian Vilem Precan’s lecture will focus on continuity and discontinuity in Czech history, the legacy of 1968 in the 70s and 80s, and the similarities and differences between the movement for democratization (1968) and for democracy (1989).
