Where the Shoe Pinches …

Theatre adaptation of the writings of Miroslav Holub, Czech poet, scientist, dissident and maverick

by John McClelland

Directed by Holly McClelland

“His work is a laying bare of things, not so much the skull beneath the skin, more the brain beneath the skull”

Seamus Heaney

Where The Shoe Pinches…Holub was pinched, squeezed and silenced for many years by a Communist regime that labeled him a ‘non-person’, a suspect intelligence.

From the enforced silence quietly seeped a stream of haunting words.  Science, fairy tales and the surreal collide in a dark, magical, analytical world

Where The Shoe Pinches…opens a little door on to the mysterious.  Enter and explore the absurdity of life, the oppression of truth and the triumph of death…

‘Only sorcerers believe that the theatre is a mingling of the blood of the poet with the blood of the actor. The simple magic of the theatre is in the fact that an empty space which signifies nothing is entered by people with tickets and by people who tear off tickets, and by people in overcoats and people without overcoats, and by people who know it all by heart and by people who don’t know it by heart yet’.  Miroslav Holub.
